I’m excited and honored to be the new Executive Director for the Katie Ride for Life and to be working with all of you!

I have to give the Katie Ride credit for two major things in my life:

First, after volunteering five years ago at the ride and watching so many wonderful athletes, I was inspired to become a cyclist. Since then, I have expanded my athletic endeavors to include numerous triathlons, and I have joyfully participated in three Katie Rides (the only year I missed was during the Boston Marathon).

Second, and more importantly, this event and this organization motivated me to become an organ donor. Before learning about Katie’s story and the importance of organ donation in saving so many lives, I had never thought much about it. After meeting the Caples and being involved in that first ride, I immediately changed the status on my driver’s license to read ”organ donor”.

It’s often been said that one word or one action can change someone’s life forever. In this case, the Katie Ride for Life and its important mission of educating and inspiring more people to become organ and tissue donors is changing many lives.

I look forward to working with all of you for the upcoming 2011 ride. In the mean time, we are busy working on year-round cycling advocacy programs, organ donor educational programs and expanding the ride to other cities.

Thank you and ride safely!

Cycling Q&A of the Day (from Bicycling Magazine)

Q: Should I buy a carbon-fiber bike?

A: Absolutely. Maybe. Unless you shouldn’t. Carbon is generally lighter than other materials, can be constructed to provide specific ride qualities in ways that metal tubes can’t, and offers unlimited tube shapes–aero or just freaky cool. If you race and want a super stiff frame, carbon offers the best mix of low weight, aerodynamics and drive-train stiffness without a buckboard ride. But it’s also expensive. And not all carbon is equal: Less expensive frames use lower grades of fiber, which are heavier and less stiff, and often have a dead ride quality when compared with higher-grade carbon.

If you’re on a budget, there are many racy bikes made of high-tech aluminum or a mix of alloy and carbon, which are stiff and light but will ride a bit more harshly than their all-carbon brethren. If you prize a smooth, refined ride feel, carbon can deliver–but so can steel and titanium, both of which continue to advance as frame materials. Ultimately, you should decide based on what you’re willing to spend and whether you’re a carbon person. Did you stand in line to buy the iPhone? Carbon’s cutting-edge tech will appeal to you. But if you’re restoring a 1952 MGTD in your garage, then a tin or steel bike from a small builder may be just right.
